At age 36, Heather was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma, just after giving birth to her first and only child. She was originally given a prognosis of just 15 months. Heather underwent an aggressive extrapleural pneumonectomy surgery, which removed one of her lungs. She is now a survivor sharing her story and working to raise awareness of mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos.

She has spoken as a keynote speaker for prominent conferences while also speaking out through social media forums. Heather has also advocated for an asbestos ban by speaking to government representatives on numerous occasions.
